School Reflection

 Term 1

I don’t remember much about Term 1, but I do remember going on camp, camp was definitely one of the highs of Term 1, I really enjoyed sleeping in a tent with my good friends Jasmin and Mak, The worst bit of term four was when I fell down the hill biking back from camp, It hurt like hell and it was a pain to walk back.

Term 2

Obviously term 2 was mostly spent in lockdown, I enjoyed lockdown for the first few weeks but it did get really boring, I did learn how to self manage better though, and I talked to my friends over discord. It was kinda scary at some parts but all in all it wa a fun experience being in lockdown, and I don’t want to do it again.

Term 3

Skiing was my favourite part of term 3, I also made quite a few new guy friends in term 3. Which I am grateful for, I honestly think term 3 was my favourite term of the year, I have so many memories from term 3 and I am super grateful for them.

Term 4

Term 4 really hit me hard, it sunk in that I would be going to high school very soon, its my last term of intermediate, but I am so excited to go to high school! The worst part of the year for me was definitely technology, I did not enjoy tech at all, but the best bit was definitely talking with my friends in the grass and just chatting, I love my friends so much. This year has been a rollercoaster!

Jellie Park Trip

On friday, my class Tangaroa, went down to Jelly park and it was AMAZING

my favourite part was going down the hydroslides, I went down with my friend Mak and it went really really fast, we nearly tipped over the edge, it wa scary and fun as hell.

I also enjoyed swimming in the pool with mak, but the best bit was watching my friend Lewis do a belly flop of the diving board, absolute legend.

Me and Mak hanged out the most and it was super fun, we talked a lot and we applied loads and loads of sunscreen, way to much probably, but I did not get sunburn so it worked!

at the cafe I bought an Ice coffee because Its my favourite drink, I am a coffee addict, it had cream and ice cream and it was the best thing ever!

It was a great day!

Maths

Today in maths, we did Tessellation and we did three examples on google drawings, I think it was reletivly easy and fun.

Fun lil short story

There was a girl, looking out a window, beading crystals scatter down the gloom filled glass, She is dancing with a man, hair drenched fully to the bone, white silk clamps around her body, her mind is alive with a billion sparks of angst, joy, sadness and guilt, the man grabs her, lifting her angelic swan like bodice of the ground, they spin into oblivion.

the sun shines unforgivingly into my eyes, I look over at sleeping Henry. He is the sweetest boy I know, but I am the worst girl I know, he loves me, and I will break his massive heart down into the gutters of London, where the golden dust that he is made of will perish instantly, and he will be broken, In the morning, he plays his bass guitar, the loud thumps is another reminder of the way my brother ran away, a piercing siren calling me to follow him, but I didn’t, and this man is a key to finding him.

They hug and he says he loves her, but little does he know, he is her escape. - Henry engulfs me in a hug, just like every morning, his golden brown hair cascades down into his eyes, he is warm, and I am cold.

After a week he calls her and asks if she is okay, she is crying in an alleyway cause she misses her brother. Everything she does is to get back to her brother, she says she is fine, over and over again. - I cry, tears sting down my face, everywhere a tear hits burns and stings like acid, the phone beeping on the sidewalk next to me hums loudly and I smash my empty hand into the wall, blood dripping down into my fingernails. I answer Henry's phone call, his words are blurred and as I hang up after reassurance. I say “I am Fine dear.”

She left Henry that day, the man was left in his barn, on his knees with $100 and a ticket to Florida, where he always wanted to live, but he wanted her…

She screamed insanitys and gibberish yells as they raced across the highway, leather jacket man zipping them down the vast countryside at 300 miles per hour, they had met at a bike shop, he claimed his bike needed fixing so she rented a bike and he took her on a trip to Brighton, England, a city her brother had wanted to visit. Kissing him goodbye on the beach, she vowed to remember him if she saw him in the street, he was different to Henry, Micheal with the Motorbike, what a troubled soul.

Joyful colours are injected into the dim sky, it is now lit by a million light lamps, the noise shakes me onto my knees as I cry in delight and grief. He loved firework night, what would he say right now? A tall lady pokes through my line of vision, she is beautiful, her tall leen scale makes her look graceful and elegant, she has the body of a swan, as she walks closer I see her angelic dangerous eyes, bright, crystal blue. She was a demon in disguise, but I already lost everything, so we become workmates, all my days now are spent with her, pierre is her name, and she is lost in a word of lies and broken trust, she needed to be nurtured so her wings were ready to fly again, but I knew she didn’t love me, she would fly away and leave me, but oh, I loved her.

Pierre was intelligent, she discovered everything about her, her mental health state and how many people she had lied to, she never let anyone fully in to her heart, Pierre was crashing through those walls, they cried to each other every night and held each other close, they were each others anchor, the person they clinged on to for support, Pierre would leave when she was strong. Pierre apologized for the future, both knew that Pierre would leave her battered, bruised and insane.

Two years after Pierre came into her life, a diamond ring was hidden in the drawer next to her bed, her brother was dead, he died last year, she got to say goodbye to him, I

Snipet of my book

Blinking. I never understood the purpose of blinking, but now I understand why people always got intrigued whenever someone was unconscious and woke up dreamily. What happens next? Is the question I ask myself when I blink my eyes, and see the face of a boy, draped in a white sheet of a nightgown. He had a halo of butterflies surrounding his silhouette. Grey and glittering gold they floated down around his pasty hair. It puzzled me how beautiful and mesmerizing he looked. Lost and scared. I felt sorry for such an obviously troubled soul, but he was gorgeous. Gorgeous and afraid, the butterflies zapped away into oblivion as  the darkness inhaled me with its huge jaws. I was in the corner of the deepest ocean. Unable to breath.

It felt like decades before I was dragged back to the surface by the very darkness that was keeping me in, it taunted me as I struggled against the bungee that was taking me away. I had grown used to the darkness, but it was a voice that made me listen. A deafening scream.

After hours and hours of condescending blackness I hear a female voice, soft and sarcastic, it was almost like her voice was two long hands, pulling me upwards to her.

“Who is she… What did the label say her name was?... Annevita Rose Gallia…  Gees what a strange name… she's from the north side?... oh that makes sense…”

My eyes flickered open again and this time I didn't see the boy, just a whirring bright light shining into my open irises. Pity.

I make a sound of disgust and discomfort at the light,

3D geometry Shapes

In maths today we got pieces of paper and made 3D shapes, it was really hard and it was difficult to work your head around but we all finished them and I made a chirstmas tree with the shapes I made.

Maths Geometry Update

This Week in Maths we have been learning about geometry and tan-grams, we went on a site called mathigon.com and did the tan-gram maker game which we learnt how to rotate, flip and slide tangram pieces into their correct place. We had a different shapes and we had to fit them into a puzzle outline. Doing the tan-grams is all about rotating, flipping and mirroring.

We also had to do heaps of long sheets about geometry with stuff like if I do a 1/2 turn clockwise what are you facing? and that was really helpful.

We have been naming properties of shapes. For example,
____________
l                       1    This square has four edges,
l                       1    This square has 4 corners
l                       1     All of the corners are right angles
l                       1     It has 2 sets of parallel lines.
l___________ 1     All the sides are the same length.

and we have been doing things like that for multiple shapes.

This triangle has 3 edges and 3 corners.
all the lines are the same length.
the internal angles add up to 180 degrees.

This rectangle has two sets of parallel lines
It has 4 sides and four corners
all the lines are straight
all the internal corners are right angles
opposite sides are different lengths.

Minecraft Mystery Box: Theme Park w/ Jeneva and Abe

On Monday, Jeneva, Abe and I did a Minecraft mystery box. the theme was theme park. Jeneva and I decided to first do a tea cup ride. we made the little carousel and wanted to start making the tea cups. (Abe wasn't at school for the first day we did it.) but we soon discovered making tea cups in Minecraft was harder then it looks. so we decided to do a normal merry go round with real horses, but that was also really difficult, so we finally settled on bumper cars. we laid some slime down and added the Minecarts. by this point Abe had arrived and I really wanted to make a popcorn stand. so Jeneva finished off the carousal and Abe did the big arch way entrance. and I built a seating area and a popcorn stand/cafeteria area. it was so much fun and I really want to do it again!

Also afterwards Abe wanted to add some sea turtles but I blew them up in lava covered TNT. my own invention. It was incredibly satisfying.

Why we need to have manners in our classroom

In a classroom, manners is one of the most important things to have, to keep the cleanliness of the actual room. And to make sure people are safe and respected. Students and teachers alike.

Without manners in a classroom environment things would turn to chaos. People would be bullied. The furniture would be disgusting and no one would be having a good time at all!

When you go to school you expect decent things, maybe not an iron chandelier or endless break times. But decentness. Things like clean chairs or floors to sit on. People need manners to keep those decent thoughts alive. No one likes sitting in a disgusting grimy chair or a crummy yogurt stained floor.

Another thing is when people are just rude. They know what manners are but they don’t use them. They do things for the benefit of themselves. Like not cleaning up their own mess, or shoving people out of the doorways, which happens pretty much every time we leave to get our bags. Everyone knows what it's like to be shoved out of a doorway.

And while that's not nice. It's not the worst thing ever either. It's simply unpleasant, but things like that can actually get so much worse. Like if you get shoved into someone with a leg injury and they trip and hurt way worse than before! They could end up in hospital because of plain rudeness!

This can also lead to triggering someone's mental illness. Getting up in someone's face and being rude and self concerned. People with anxiety could break down from the stress of someone being too absorbed in their personal bubble. Or have a panic attack. Which is a lot worse guilt then just leaving them alone and being polite

People saying things like ‘shame’ can actually really hurt or embarrass people and you don’t even know it!

Being polite isn’t even that hard! Everyone does it! Just take a moment and be kind. People will complain that you are rude and selfish and you might feel guilty. It's called karma! If you want friends then be friendly! If you want a clean house then clean your room! It's really simple! Using harsh language doesn’t make you as cool as you think it does. When I see someone swearing their head off in public I don’t think

“Wow, they are so awesome and cool.” I think “They are disturbing the shared public space”

There are people in the world that will not take your rudeness well. Please just be a decent human being. That's all I ask.

You don't need to be a hero, just be nice enough so that people will be nice to you.

And what about when you go to college, it's not people's jobs there to guarantee you a career, or a future. YOU have to be the one to be organized and on time. If you want a job you can’t be rude and expect to get the job, if you don’t clean your mess, you’re fired. It's not your boss's job to take responsibility for you, in fact, it shouldn’t be anyones. No matter how old you are! We are not toddlers that need to be held and babied. We are capable of being good!

Clap for peoples achievements, dont talk when others are talking, pick up your own mess, don’t swear, respect the teachers who take us out to events, plan our school days and get everything ready on time, respect the teachers who give you second chances!

Now I have listed all of my reasons as to why people should just use manners! It's easy, it's nice, it's also beneficial to you, just do it!

Literacy Reflection

Literacy Reflection - Character Scene Analysis.

For the past week in class we have been examining and talking about all the things that directors and writers do that make us understand a character. We discovered that they do this in a number of ways, including how a character dresses, how a character acts, how a character talks. Etc.

In class we looked at multiple clips from the first scenes that Harry potter characters are introduced. And we realized really quickly that most characters fit a certain stereotype because it is easier for the audience to get an understanding of the character. Like Snape, he is tall, dark, wears intimidating clothing, for example, long black robes. His gaze is icy, all of these give lots of clues to what his personality is.

In groups or pairs we wrote character scripts/stories based on a character we created, we had to keep all of the aspects that authors and directors use in mind. I wrote the script for my group but we all created the character. Afterwards I had my friend go through and highlight all of those things. Yellow for clothing and appearance, green for environment, blue for speech, red for actions. I think that helped me see what things I needed more of and less of.

I think I have done a good job of character writing by describing how the character looks, the person that did the analysis of my writing said they could easily see who the character is from the clothing, and I think I also did well with actions, the character had a lot of cool, character building action moments.

I need to work on describing more of the environment to add to the character, only a little bit of the environment added to her character but not very much. And there was hardly any description of it.

William Pike progress.

Script analysis

The Main character - Cassie Evans Green.

Extra characters - Cop, Ward Owner.

Script  (Written by Bluebell Barr)

INT. 1992 - A psych ward in New York, ‘Cop’ is leaning against the wall next to ‘Ward Owner’ the setting is dim and dark, - late afternoon

Cop is wearing the typical cop uniform, the camera is looking up at him, he is frowning.

Ward owner is wearing a long silk robe, she has her hair down and it's dead straight. The camera is looking down at her, she is straight faced.

Cop (Skeptical)

“Is it safe? Is she properly contained in there?”

‘Cop’ gestures to the door

Ward Owner (Smirking)

“Fully held back and defenceless.”

‘Cop’ smiles

‘Cop’ stands up from the wall and gently pushes against the solitary confinement room

Camera focuses on ‘Cassie’ she is hunched over in a corner with her hands behind her back, crying.

Cassie is wearing a white long gown, her hair is in rough plaits, the camera looks directly at her.

Cassie (Sniffling)

“Please don’t shoot me…”

Blue- Speech by character

Green- Environment that adds to character

Red- Actions the character does

Yellow- What the character looks like.

Clara and Kirsten had a look at my story and highlighted bits they think match what the colours are.

after looking at there analysis I realized that I probably needed more things in the environment around Cassie to add to her character. and I had enough actions and words, but maybe a bit more of what the character looks like. This is only a snippet of the full text and its pretty much the same average of highlights through out. but I definitely need more environment related things.

Clean up- Rubbish walk.

Yesterday me and some other students went on a walk around Sea eagles park and around our school area with big bags and picked up rubbish. we wore plastic gloves and looked around to find trash. me and the people in my group (Jessica, Sophie, Caitlyn) found 67 used cigarettes. we went really far into the prickly bushes and it hurt but we found heaps! we nearly filled our whole bag. and on the way back we found these big boxes and we carried them back to school. there was a lot of them.

I actually really enjoyed it and I found a bunch of dandelions and I gave them to everyone.

Essay of Character Synthesising

In movies and books we always take notice of the characters, and for some reason we instantly understand them, their personality, and what role they play in the story, have you ever wondered why that is. Well, all of the decisions that a director, or author makes is to give you an understanding of that character. Everything has a purpose. So how much can you find out about a character by just one scene?

The very first thing you would notice about a character is the outfit they wear, if we take a look at some characters from harry potter you can see that most of the characters have a stereotype that you can figure out from just looking at what they wear, take snape for example, he wears long black robes that are silky and mysterious liked spilled ink, and jet black hair, with deep dull eyes. Portraying an evil character, a bad guy stereotype, the same thing happens with Hermione granger, from her poofy hair and  clean and ironed school uniform you can decide that she is a bit of a neat freak and likes being perfect, also, she got in her uniform before anyone else, making her seem like the person that thrives on being on time.

Another thing that helps you find out what a character is like is the actions that they do, from a short two minute scene watching Ron weasley, by studying the actions that he does you get a pretty decent accurate idea of what he is like, if you look at this phrase you can break it down and discover heaps!

¨I'm the sixth in our family to go to Hogwarts. You could say I've got a lot to live up to. Bill and Charlie have already left -- Bill was head boy and Charlie was captain of Quidditch. Now Percy's a prefect. Fred and George mess around a lot, but they still get really good marks and everyone thinks they're really funny. Everyone expects me to do as well as the others, but if I do, it's no big deal, because they did it first. You never get anything new, either, with five brothers. I've got Bill's old robes, Charlie's old wand, and Percy's old rat."

He says how he has a lot to live up to and that everyone expects him to do great things, but you can obviously tell that he is unsure that he can do it, which makes you think he is shy and a bit scared, and nervous to go to hogwarts, you also can tell that he is resentful which comes in to play later in the books. So from one phrase you learn so much about Ron.

Now we are going back again to look at snape, and the environment he is in, which again, tells us a lot about him. Snape teaches in a dungeon, which typically is a stereotype for evil places, a dark gloomy dungeon would normally be where bad things lie ahead?

Also you can see pickled animals and flickering lights, not the greatest thing to see in a dungeon, which makes us suspicious. Which gives you ANOTHER idea of the character.

So in a brief conclusion, everything a director/writer does is 100% on purpose, nothing is placed in a book or movie without careful consideration and thinking. Everything in a scene can help you discover what a character is about and their personality.

Thank you for reading.

Science Project Inquiry

For Science this term (and term 4) we have been told to create a sort of plan or prototype for an outdoor garden, basically the prompt was make a garden that has a variety of plants that fit the purpose, also researching about what these plants need, which season they grow best in, what plants they can grow with, what kind of dirt, etc. Their were three different types of garden we could make, a vegetable garden that will provide food all year round, a garden that provides a safe space for new zeland native birds, and a healing garden with plants and spaces that can heal you, physically and mentally. We had the freedom to do whatever we want to showcase our garden, so I decided to do my garden in mine craft. I also decided to do a healing garden. I have already started planning which plants to use and links to sources about how to plant them, and what is needed to provide them life.  I have also made a rough plan for my minecraft build. My next step is probably to find out what each plant thrives best in which season. like what season is best to plant that plant. I think it would be cool to have different sections for each season and that area of plants and trees , etc.

I am really excited for this terms science inquiry and can't wait to finish!

Queen of air and darkness Book Review

Queen of Air and Darkness

So far in my book the main characters Julian, Emma, Christina and Mark have been involved in some pretty cool action filled death defying missions. This is the third book in the series. The story arc is following Emma and Julian's complicated, extremely forbidden and law breaking, family breaking, love story. And also the love triangle/pentagon with Mark, Christina and Kieran. Believe me both of these love stories are very confusing to understand. But! While these are going their is also a half war half revolution going on because the inquisitor of the shadow hunter council (The Clave) sucks quite a fair deal. And his daughter is really annoying. Basically they hate him. But that's not the main story arc. Julian and Emma can't fall in love because of a curse called the parabatai curse (They are parabatai), the curse means that if parabatai where to fall in love then they get stronger and more powerful but then they get so strong that they become mindless monsters that will destroy everything that gets in their path. So, naturally, they are so keen on that because Julian has 6 siblings and the oldest, Helen Blackthorn, got sent away because of a law that passed after the dark war called the cold peace. Which basically means that faeries have no rights, at all… and Helen is a half faerie so she got sent away to an island called wrangel island. And Mark, who is also half faerie, got captured by a faerie “gang” called the wild hunt, and they are pretty gangsta. (No, actually they reap the souls of the dead and help them pass on to the afterlife. They also are pretty scary and strong)

So because of this Julian was the oldest and at 11 he had to look after all the children and he now thinks of himself as their father. So yeah. Doesn't want to kill them. I would say the main goal of the characters in the book is to exterminate the cold peace. But there is also a lot going on as well that could take ages to write, Like the main villain from another series related to this one I found out had a child that enters things in this book! Which I think is awesome because I loved that villains narrative.

Anyway thats basically whats poppin in Queen of Air and Darkness.

100% 10 stars. I love this series and author (Cassandra Clare) so much!!

Pride Writing :3

Everything was going smoothly, everything was in place and ready for the following day, the glorious artwork was shimmering softly in the glow of the moon. It was near midnight. My best friend was finishing making the playlist of music to burst through the speakers the following day. Hundreds of pride flags were dotted through the streets of New York. We had just finished chalking out various pride flags along the streets, with the gorgeous colours of the transgender flag, the special pigments in the bisexual flag, and the fun childlike colours of the pansexual flag everything looked perfect.

The dream was being shaped out and created in the city of life. It was going to be amazing, except for my speech. I hadn't even started, I have so many words revolving around in my head that I can't even write down! I need to escape and write it. I needed more than just pictures and music to persuade lgbtqi+ rights in New York. I needed to move the crowd, to persuade them, so I said farewell to my friend and headed to the closest milkshake bar.

I ordered nachos and sat at the table with my head plonked down on the computer. Yeah. it's gonna be a long night. My fingers fly across the keyboard but consistently backtrack to the backspace key. As I am close to giving up I hear an angel calling me from above. Is it time for resting? I am dragged to reality as I see a girl looking down at me. I blush and pull my long black hair behind my face as she smiles at me. She is beautiful. “Are you running the pride parade tomorrow?

I sigh, “Don't even ask… All night I have been trying to write a speech.” she sits down next to me. I shiver at the cold, but I don't feel it.

“Thanks.”

......

“And that kid is how I met your mother!” I say, flourishing my hands out wide. I hear her sigh behind me and I intertwine my fingers with hers.

“She was soooo tired that night, nearly fell asleep talking to me.” She exclaims to the kids.

“Oh shoosh.” I sighed out. Content at the world.

Everything was going smoothly.

WE are the Resistance.

Klaus… as far as I know, that's my name. There are facts about me that I know. My age, my skin colour, my name, last name. That's all irrelevant to who I really am. What really matters is who I love, what I believe in, what am I fighting for… I'm fighting for freedom, I'm fighting to save who I love, I'm fighting for equality. This government has been in power for way too long making all the wrong decisions. That is what I will put an end to. And if I die, it doesn't matter because I know that the people that are rooting for me won't just remember my name, my age or my family name. They remember me for saving them...

In the afterlife maybe I will remember stepping up on the podium with my comrades keeping the government officials still so they watch me destroy their power. I walk up to the whirring diamond.
My hand plunges through the force field keeping the government in power. As their power source, nothing will be fixed now. The acid reaches a boil on my fist. I bubble away to the cheers of my people. The cries of my betrayed lover. And the wails of the sirens that are blaring through the cities.

My goals are keeping everything in paragraphs and using correct grammar.

How to find the area of a shape

"Area! The mathematics of finding how much surface area is in a shape! That sounds exciting! We're basically going to be learning how to do simple geography! You must be on the edge of your seat!"

say I have a square, the perimeter of that square is 10cm, 5cm, 5cm, 10cm. Say I wanted to find the area of the square using the perimeter. First you get the length and width of the square. The length is 10cm, and the width is 5cm.
So you go 10cm x 5cm = 50cm.
So 50cm would be the area of the square. (My apologies its actually a rectangle.)

Visual Prompt (Show not Tell)

The tears flickered and burned in the corners of her eyes, he stood a few feet back. She turned her heel and pelted back to him, wrapping her arms securely around his waist, She heard him sigh, saw his eyebrows widen, and watched as his long arms draped around her waist loosely. He tried to tug her away but she dug her fingernails into his shirt with a fire inside her, refusing to be ruled over. The bell rang, a loud clear noise, ringing through her ears, tormenting her, she flung herself away from him and ran as fast as her shivering legs would run. He could hear him yell for her but she was burning through her body with new found power and she ran faster, faster and faster, in the direction of the forest.

Maths Blog Update-Circumference

Nogo told us to go and measure the Diameter of the circle in the middle of the court. Being the very intelligent being that I am I decided to measure the VERY small circle. you know, the tiny one. and while everyone else measurements were around 12 and 14. mine was 3 1/2. wow, nice one Bluebell.
Then we were told to work out the circumference of the circle with only the measurements of the diameter.

SO 3.5 (d) = 11 (c)!

  I worked this out because C = pi x d.

Maths- Volume Learning

Maths- Volume Learning Session

Today in Maths we learnt about Volume and finding the volume of objects such as cubes, etc. One of the questions was

width= 16 Length= 11 Height= 1.5

Find the volume of this cube, (use calculaters) and then work out how much concrete you would need to make it. its $4 per cubix metre.
The volume was = 264m
and the final answer was 1056. yay!

Text 1

Gardening in the Living Room - Page 3 How do plants grow

Year 5-Year 8 and up because it looks a bit higher level then juniors but not difficult enough to be for adults or teens.

The purpose is to help people understand the whole process of plants growing. Using factual language.

There are images so we can have a full idea of how it works and there are also close ups to show the closer things.

Arrows showing what different parts of the text are explaining.

There are words near the arrows to show what goes where.

And also a big text box explaining it in a lot more detail.

Text 2

Planting an apple tree

Year 6 to Year 8 because it has a few hard words but still a bit easy for older kids

To help people understand how a tree grows.

Giant tree and roots

The arrows pointing to the different parts of the tree

Short texts that explain each piece

Text 3

Tui planting calendar

Year 7 to year 10 because there is quite a lot going on and it's quite a hard to red chart

To show people when it is best to plant certain animals. And also how long it takes

Like plan images showing how good out of three. A big chart/graph

The plant images on the graph to show the best out of 3

Text is on the side with a few steps on how to plant

Text 3

This Synthesis is about all the different elements in a scientific graph, such as audience, visuals, etc.

First you have to know what a scientific diagram is, its basically a visual representation

Audience- The audience can be decided by what words people are using in their texts. Words like flower, bug and dirt would be words used in level 1 to 3. But in a year level for 7 to 8s then words like photosynthesis and jargon and nutrition would be used. You can also tell in the pictures. If there are a bunch of little cartoon images everywhere. Then it is highly likely that it is for younger kids. But a more detailed, toned down image for older kids and adults. Like in one of the texts above there is quite a few scientific words but not too hard so that it is adult level. It has a picture of a tree and the roots with simple arrows pointing to different elements, so its around the age of 9 to 14.

Purpose- When you are trying to find out what the purpose in a diagram is, you have to look at the factual information that it gives, the title and also subheadings, once you have a pretty good idea of what the main idea of the text is, then you have the purpose. Like if you look at the first text above, You can clearly see that it is to describe photosynthesis and how a plant grows, you can figure this out from the image and the main texts.

Visuals - Visuals are not the key element in a scientific diagram, but they do help pull the whole thing together, If you were making a diagram about trees and tree roots you would probably have an image of a tree and roots so that you can clearly see what happens with the roots and etc.
You can also have images that don’t have any value to the diagram, like a little fish for an ocean diagram. And it makes the diagram pop!
A good example of this is in the second diagram above here, about planting trees, it has a tree held up by posts. Fitting the text. Oh yes, that's another thing, visual images must fit the text so it's not random and it all works together.

Symbols- Symbols are relatively important to a diagram, symbols are things like arrows and dashes, mostly the arrows are pointing to different points on an image and explaining bits about them, like pointing to an apple on an apple tree and talking about apples and worms and things about apples, but you wouldn't point to an apple and talk about pears. Symbols can also be the squiggly line that you draw to mark a bees path across the sky. Stuff like that.

Labels- Labels means text, the words that explain things in a diagram, normally using scientifically correct words and sentences, very factual and informative, just like in the last text above, which is a graph of when it is best to plant depending on the month, they explain why its best and they also use little plant pictures to show how good it is out of three.
